Resolve to Evolve

My New Year’s Resolutions are usually something achievable with little or no effort on my part. My traditional resolutions have been things like: Don’t get a terrible haircut this year.
Or
Keep being awesome.

But a true resolution should be something that betters you or your community. So things like avoiding a shitty haircut shouldn’t really make the grade, resolution-wise.

I have been thinking lots about my upcoming resolutions.
Much of this is fuelled by the fact that I don’t want to get depressed when I inevitably fail to achieve my admirable resolution. Curing Cancer or achieving World Peace sure sounds great, but that’s just setting myself up for failure.

I have realized lots of what makes a resolution achievable is in the wording. Resolutions are a contract with yourself, so if the contract is ironclad that you will “workout for 3 hours a day” you are destined for a sucky year. Because by January 4th you might not feel up to it….decide to eat an entire cheesecake instead and then write off the rest of the year.
Or say, “I will volunteer at the Old Folks Home every day after work for the whole year”. That might not work out. But if you make a resolution slightly more vague by saying “I will volunteer with seniors more often”, then sure, that’s very do-able.
You could do it 6 times and win your resolution goal!

This year I was going to tackle some pretty intense stuff, but I have word it just right so I don’t get discouraged and quit right away.

Here are my resolutions *deep breath*:

1- Get back into more regular workouts. More regular then never. Which is what I have been doing for the past year.
I am starting with a teeny a 7 minute daily workout routine. So I will *try* to accomplish at least a 7 minute workout everyday.
And then, upwards from there!
Maybe by the end of the year I’ll be up to, like, 12 minutes of working out each day.
Good job, me!

7mins

2- Make strides to eventually become vegan. I have been slowly working my way along this journey for years. And this year I think I finally managed to give up meat completely. So the next step is dairy completely.
I think I am doing great, but then I realize something like instant miso soup has bonito powder in it. Darn!
Disappointing, but it doesn’t mean back to square one of eating steaks for dinner each night.
I know this is a long ongoing process, but it is one I am happy to undertake. Hopefully by this time next year I will be much further along with my resolve for improving the lives of animals and helping to find a better balance with consuming v. environmentalism.

veg.heart

3- Respond to people saying “Thanks!” with “Welcs!”.
Okay, this isn’t exactly going to make the world a better place, BUT my mom does this. She is the only person on planet earth I know that does, and I think it’s adorable.

So there you have it! My resolutions to be less of a terrible person.

What’s on your plate for the upcoming year? And how are you going to ensure success?

It never gets old

I got a tattoo.
Yes, another one.
Don’t tell my mom.

But this one is so very different than the others.
Why?
Because this time around, I opted for permanent makeup.

I was having a recent conversation with my mother-in-law during which she was considering getting her cosmetic tattooing re-done. I never even knew she’d had it in the first place.
She was going on and on about great it was and how it was so cheap and lasted for so long and it was so easy just to wake up splash some water on your face and go!

I started thinking about it.
My eyes had gotten quite sensitive in the past couple years. I love eye makeup and used to load it on, but lately my eyes have been getting irritated easily and I’ve been reluctantly foregoing most eye makeup as of late.

I started looking it up online a little and I began warming to the idea.

Then I found a place just blocks away with good online reviews.
So, I walked in and made an appointment.

Then I got a little… terrified.
A tattoo.
On my face.
What if it got messed up?
What if my eye gets punctured?
Or I go blind?
WHAT HAD I JUST COMMITTED TO?!

I did not want to end up looking like this:
Oh no!

I shouldn’t have been nervous. I already had 14 tattoos and no really issues with any of them. And I wasn’t getting my tattoo done in prison, so I probably wouldn’t end up looking like a freak.

The big day came, I waltzed into the place ready to meet with Sherry.

She was sweet and had been doing cosmetic tattooing for 15 years.
She had done her own face. Which looked lovely (with the exception of her freakishly big collegen lips).

I tried to relax by chatting with her as she drew on the liner she would trace.
I asked her why more places don’t offer this service. It seems very popular, especially in this area.

She responded by saying most aestheticians won’t do it because of all the blood.

Great.
Eye blood.
This “friendly chat” wasn’t helping me relax at all.

I didn’t really think about the inevitable eye blood because I hadn’t signed a waiver or anything like you do with regular body tattoos.
It was slightly comforting knowing I could sue the hell out of both Sherry and Profile Ltd if my eyes fell out.

Sherry asked me what I wanted (like how natural, thickness, shape, if I wanted my eyebrows done too, etc).

After drawing on the liner and arguing about more, less, longer, shorter, thicker or thinner (we quickly settled on exactly what she originally drew), and the process began.

It starts with a numbing cream applied to the lids.
And I wondered why regular tattoos don’t use a numbing cream, ’cause it sure seems like a great idea.
But Sherry said it was super expensive, so that could be one reason.
The cream sort of prickles and tingles for the first few minutes, but once 15 mins has gone by everything was feeling groovy.
Until she injected my lids with another numbing agent.
Those 6 little injection pins pricks were unpleasant.

Then Sherry began the tattooing and that was totally fine. It just felt like a tickly feather going over my lids. Until I twitched, or she slipped, or both.
Whatever happened, she really jabbed in and the bleeding began.
And then she hit another spot that was not numbed at all.
And I had to have another one of those damned injections.

About halfway through, it began to feel as though she was stitching my eyes closed.
And by the end of it, my eyes were swollen and I did not want to open them back up.
Ever.
Barf.
It felt terrible and was really starting to hurt.

Why did I think for some magic reason this tattoo wouldn’t hurt?
The other 14 all did (in varying degrees).
And of course, this would have been way worse as it was on my eyelid.
Thank goodness for that numbing cream.

But 90 minutes later it was over.

She gave me the instructions:
No soap or hot water for a week and apply vaseline for 2 weeks.
And if it didn’t take or I wanted to add more, I could come in for one free touchup in the next 3 months.

I toddled back out to the front desk paid the $225 and was on my way into the bright sunshine and wind.
Squinting hurt.
So did looking.

I felt much better after napping for a couple hours.

And 3 days later, the swelling all but subsided and most all of the pain is gone.

But, I probably won’t be getting any more makeup tattoos anytime soon.
Fortunately, this lasts for 5-10 years, so I don’t have to make any decisions right now.

Here are the before and after pics of my eye bulbs! (after pics are like 2 days after, and look weird partially because they are all oily with Vaseline):

Rocked the walk!

Hi Everyone,

This past weekend was our big walk for the BC SPCA!
It was a beautiful sunny day (and, of course, breezy by the water).
We had a good time and Koa liked seeing all the dogs!

I didn’t have an actual dog to walk for the event, so Koa acted as an excellent substitute:

IMG_5901

Altogether you, Koa, and I raised $905 for the BC SPCA (British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). This placed us squarely as the number 3 highest fundraisers in the city. Amazing!

To help break it down, the $905 can do all this:

~ 13 kittens being fixed (spayed or neutered)

~ 11 puppies being fixed (spayed or neutered)

~ 58 bales of Timothy Hay for the small animals

~ 129 bags of cat litter (40lb bags of pine litter)

~ 1606 loads of laundry

~ 90,500 pieces of printer paper

~ 301 bags of cat treats

The participants in the city of Richmond walk raised a grand total of $17,406 for the animals, so we played a substantial role. A big shout out to everyone who donated, walked, and helped fundraise!

Thank you so much for all your generous donations and heartfelt support!
It really meant a lot to me (and made a great difference to the animals in need).

-If you wanted to make a donation, but forgot – please let me know. You can still contribute!
-If you never got your letter/thank you gift from me, give me a holler and I’ll get it sorted.
-If you want to continue to support the SPCA throughout the year or choosing another animal friendly organization that is more your cup of tea, I have tips on figuring that out for you.
-If you loved your thank you gift/card, let me know! I might have an extra I can send you.

Again thank you so much for your support!

Here are some pics from the big day:

Koa gears up early by getting his tail wagging!

IMG_5908

And by mid morning is practicing in his full puppy outfit (pictured at the top of the post)

We arrive to walk at exactly naptime, so Koa is fa bit of a Grumpelstiltskin:

IMG_5915

But he still has enough energy to wander around and meet some of the real dogs (though all those pictures are terrible, so here’s one of him standing alone with dogs in the background):

IMG_5918

We might have taken a bit of a shortcut to speed the walk along…..but, nevertheless, we made it to the finish line!

IMG_5923

And the walk was in Garry point park in beautiful Steveston, so it was lovely!

GPP3

And windy along the water’s edge!

Thanks again to all of you for your support!

Much Love,
Lynn and Koa

Last call!

snuffs

Our big walk for the SPCA is tomorrow.
So if you were wanting to support us, please don’t wait!

We are already 91% of the way to our goal, so a HUGE thank you to everyone who has already donated and wished us luck. You have truly warmed my heart!
And we are currently the third highest fundraising team in the city!

I would love to make it to our goal of $1000, so please consider making a donation. Even $5 would be an amazing help! (and due to the current state of the Canadian dollar, that’s only $3.50 US!).

All funds donated go straight to the BC SPCA. This organization strives to help all animals of BC (domestic, wild, and farm) through sheltering, cruelty investigation, emergency medical care, education programs for children, adoption and many other initiatives.

If you would like to support us and the animals, please check out my donation page:

http://support.spca.bc.ca/site/TR/PawsforaCause/2015PawsforaCause?px=1476416&pg=personal&fr_id=1769

If you would like to join us for the walk, make a donation offline, register for a walk in your area, or learn more – please let me know!

Anyone who makes a donation will get a thank you gift from me, a follow up report on our walk, and pictures of the fun… as well as my eternal love and gratitude!
Plus, donations of $20 or more will receive a tax receipt.

Other ways you can help without making a monetary contribution include:
-Sharing my fundraising page with your friends and family
Volunteering for a walk in your area

Thank you again for your support and love.

15 days and 12%

Different-pets-photo-on-BC-SPCA-website

Hi Team,
The upcoming BC SPCA walk is just 15 days away. And Team Starkiller is a mere 12% away from making our goal of $1000 big huge animal loving dollars!
A huge thank you to everyone who’s already made a donation.
You guys have really rocked my socks with your big hearts and awesome generosity!
I’m hoping you are all loving your silly little thank you gifts.

I would love to make this goal of $1000. Though it’s ambitious, and I think I’ve only reached my goal once before in all the years I’ve done this walk…. I am confident I can get there!

I just need a little more support. So please share my donation page with your friends, family, and anyone you know who is a big old softy for animals.

All the cash goes to the BC SPCA to help run their educational programs, pay for veterinary assistance to animals, investigate claims of animal cruelty, and helps keep their shelters open.

So please consider making a small (or huge!) donation to this cause.

If you would prefer to show your support by making a donation offline, or by walking with us – please give me a shout. I would be happy to facilitate.

And yes, I still have loads of fun gifts for those who are going to be making donations!

The walk is happening on September 12th. So get ready for some fun pics of Koa being sniffed by pups!

You can check out my donation page here:

Eco Nuts

As you probably know, I am on a perpetual mission to reduce plastic use.

And today the EcoNuts Soap Nuts I ordered arrived!  This product is an all natural alternative to laundry detergent.

EcoNuts

Soap Nuts are actually dried berries of the Himalayan Soap Nut tree. When agitated in water, these dried berries produce Saponin – a natural cleaner that works as a surfactant.

The list of benefits of Eco Nuts Soap is impressive:

  1. Soap nuts are gentle and natural. They are a great option for those with allergies and sensitivities as the product is 100% natural. It is only dried soap berries that you put in a cloth bag and add to water. It also means they are great for baby clothes, those with psoriasis, and eczema.
  2. Soap Nuts do not contain artificial foaming agents, so they are not creating a huge impact on our waterways or septic tanks.
  3.  Soap Nuts are wild harvested and the trees are not treated with pesticides or chemicals. So the product is organic and has a low impact on ecosystems by creating no artificial disturbances.
  4. Soap Nuts are packaged in a paper box and therefore totally forego any need for another stupid plastic bottle of soap!
  5. Soap Nuts are a good bang for your buck. The box goes for $10 on Amazon and claims to be enough for 100 loads (which would be about 3 bottles of detergent).

Yay ECO NUTS!

I tested them out on a regular old load of laundry. I threw 5 of the Nuts into the cloth bag provided and dumped it in with my clothes. Set on the regular wash cycle and my clothes now seem clean. Success!

If you are one of those people who LOVES the scent of laundry detergent, this product is not for you. The clothes come out clean, but they don’t smell all weird and fake scented like perfume.

If you are in the US, you can order your Eco Nuts on their website here:

http://econutssoap.com/

You can also order for other countries, but the $hipping is bonker$! So, ordering through Amazon proves to be a better deal if you are in someplace silly, like say, Canada.

Gifts for all!

wild babies

I have decided that presents make everything more fun!

Everyone that donates to my Paws for a Cause Walk for the BC SPCA, will get a little thank you gift in the mail from me!

I get a great sense of reward and accomplishment from the act of donating, fundraising, and knowing I’m helping those in need. And I want you to let you all know how great it feels to have you onboard with me.
I think fundraising/donating should be fun for everyone!

The fun starts on the donation page: You can pick any name you want for the publicly shown donor name. In the past “Cthulhu”, “Michael Jackson”, and even “Macho Man Randy Savage” have been listed as my past supporters. So think of something wacky and get on my Fundraising Honour Roll with your chosen name!

But the fun doesn’t stop there!
If you make a donation (no matter the amount), just let me know your mailing address and thank you fun will be mailed to you shortly!

Beyond that, you will have that happy warm glowing feeling that comes with helping animals in need.

AND a tax receipt if you donate $20 or more!
…and though a tax receipt might not be a great motivator to those of you in the US, please keep in mind you have a different incentive.
Right now our dollar is so sucky, that your fat American dollars are super valuable! For example, if you made a donation of $20 CAD, it would only cost you $15.34 USD
Is that a great deal or what?!

Fun and good vibes all around!

piglet

I am already 1/3 of the way to my goal, so thank you so much to those who have already contributed!

For the rest of you, your present and my eternal gratitude await!

You can jump to my donation page right here to help all the critters of BC (domestic, wild, and farm).

Please contact me if you would prefer to make a donation offline or if you would like to join us for the walk!

Thank you from the bottom of our animal loving hearts!

xo

Paws for a Cause

SPCA

Hi everybody!

First off, I would like to give a huge thank you to all my past supporters. Your support over the past 5 years really makes participating in the walk more fun!

The walk is on September 12th. And I’m excited to say that Koa and Rhiannon will be joining me this year!

Together we are Team Starkiller!

The walk might be a little far for Koa, but we’re starting our training now.

You can jump on over to support Team Starkiller right here:

Donations and thanks

The purpose of this event is to raise much needed funds for the care and protection of animals across the province of BC. All animals. The BC SPCA helps look after all our furry little friends – including wild and farm animals – because they know all kinds of animals are important.
Established in 1895, the BC SPCA is a not-for-profit organization that receives no government funding and is entirely reliant upon community support.

Each year the BC SPCA provides emergency medical care and sheltering for nearly 30,000 animals that may have been abandoned, abused, neglected, or surrendered because their owner is unable or unwilling to care for them any longer. This annual walk funds most of the BC SPCAs operations.
The BC SPCA is the only animal welfare agency with the mandate and authority to respond to complaints of animal cruelty in B.C.
Last year, the BC SPCA conducted 8.849 new cruelty investigations. Which is over a thousand up from the previous year.
The Paws for a Cause walk helps fund cruelty investigations and, more importantly, helps to prevent cruelty before it occurs through legislation, education, and awareness.

Please support me, and the BC SPCA, by donating today!

Don’t be shy if you can’t afford tons of bucks. Every little bit helps. Even a single dollar will work to educate one student through the “Kindness Counts” curriculum helping to stop the cycle of abuse by teaching empathy.
This organization works hard to streamline its admin and overhead costs. 80% of the funds raised goes directly towards services for animals. With the other 20% going to admin and revenue development.

Ways you can support the cause:

-Make a donation! Donations of $20 or more will get a tax receipt.
Register for the walk!
-You can walk with us!
-You can volunteer to help out at a walk location near you!

If you can’t afford anything and are too lazy to walk but still want to help out you can:

-Share my donation page!
-Spread the word about the walk!
-Spread the word about the SPCA and the good work they do!
-Teach people about animal welfare!

Thank you so much for all your support!

Here is the link if you would like to make a donation to support us and the animals:

Tip of the week: Toothy Tabs

Tip of the week

Tip of the Week: Alternate packaging!

This series is all about how to reduce your reliance on plastics. And the tip of the week is to seek out alternative packaging.

Lately I have been looking at alternatives to my traditionally packaged products.
Some of the worst offenders are products that come in mixed material packaging that is not recyclable.

Mixed material packaging is often plastic-foil wrappers (like those used for for candy bars and potato chip bags). An easy solution there is just not to buy these items.

But sometimes mixed packaging is hard to avoid. I’ve been fretting over my toothpaste tube for a while now and wondering if there is an alternative (short of making my own toothpaste).

LUSH cosmetics carries a product called Toothy Tabs. These dry tabs come in a paper box and are: lightweight, vegan, and travel friendly.

toothytabs

First of all, toothy tabs are not mints. Follow the instructions for proper use or you will be sorry!

You crunch up the dry tab in your teeth, then use a wet toothbrush to create the foam, and brush as per usual.

The tabs come in a variety of intriguing flavours and I am currently trying 4 of the 7 available flavours (including lemon, pepper, rose, and clove). I am still a little unsure if I love them or hate them, but they are definitely interesting!

Though the Toothy Tabs are an alternative to traditional toothpaste – they are packed with Sodium Lauroyl Sarosinate. This, and other sodium lauroyl surfactants, are common in soaps, toothpastes and shampoos – it’s the ingredient that creates the foaming action. Unfortunately,  these are a really bad polluter of waterways.
And at $5 for 40 tabs, these are not ideal for the old bank account.
But let’s focus on one issue at a time. At least LUSH is working on the packaging issue – this small paper box is made from recycled paper, and is easily recyclable!

TTs

Have you tried Toothy Tabs? What are your thoughts?
Or do you have your own alternative for the regular toothpaste tube?

Happy Fat!

So, as a last minute addition to our Father’s Day fun – I decided to go out and grab a cake. The cake shop was totally packed with a million idiots doing the same thing as me.
The workers were swamped, but doing the best they could and the line was moving pretty quickly.
Once I got to the front of the line, this is the exchange that took place:

Me: I’d like this cake
Worker: Okay, do you want any writing on it?
Me: No writing, thanks. But can I get this photo put on it (pointing to photo from their catalogue).
Worker: No, sorry we are not doing any special orders today, it’s too busy.
This was totally understandable as they were super busy.
But THEN she said:

We’re not even doing any cake writing today.

Me: Okay, but didn’t you just….?
I turn to look at the worker next to us, painstakingly writing on a cake.
He hears our conversation, immediately stops what he’s doing, puts the cake in a box, and hands it to the customer, saying: We’re not doing any cake writing today.

And she gets stuck with a cake that says:
HAPPY FAT

For real.

What the hell is going on at this cake store?!
I feel bad for the guy who’s getting that cake.
I also wish I had the authority to just fire people for terrible (albeit hilarious) customer service.

This reminds me of the time I wanted a special birthday cake with an inside joke written on it. I asked for “Have an anal birthday” and the place refused, saying it was a family establishment.
What the what?
Is that actually offensive? I wasn’t going to show the cake around to the nearby children or anything.

But this exchange also reminded me of Cake Wrecks, which I love and used to peruse all the time.
I should have taken a picture of the FAT cake today, as well as the look on the customer’s face.

It was pretty great.

HAPPY FAT, everyone!
